News website

A news site is a publication with a constant flow of stories and sharp traffic peaks. It differs from a blog in speed: material goes out hourly, several editors work at the same time, and one big story can bring tens of thousands of readers within an hour. That is why architecture matters more than design here.

01

What it is

The structure of a news site is a feed, sections, tags, running stories, columns and an archive. The editorial loop includes roles (author, editor, editor-in-chief), drafts, scheduled publishing and a history of changes. On top are the home page modules: the lead story, top of the day, most read, special projects.

The main technical challenge is load and speed. Page caching, image optimization, delivery through a CDN and a light mobile version decide whether the site survives traffic from social media and whether it loses the reader while loading.

02

Who needs it and when

This kind of site is needed when content becomes a daily flow rather than a series of posts.

  • Several authors at once

You need roles, drafts and approval, otherwise the newsroom works in a messenger and loses material.

  • Traffic is uneven

An ordinary day and the day of a big story differ tenfold — the site has to survive the peak.

  • Material gets lost

Without sections, tags and running stories the archive turns into a dump nobody uses.

  • Monetization is not set up

There are no slots for advertising, sponsored material or subscriptions — there is an audience but no revenue.

03

What the site owns

A news site owns the speed of publishing and the speed of loading.

  • Editorial process

Roles, drafts, scheduling, a history of edits, an owner for each piece.

  • Feed and sections

Home page, categories, tags, running stories — so the reader moves from one story to the next.

  • Caching and load

Pages served from cache, heavy elements loaded separately, a peak that does not take the site down.

  • Media

Photo reports, galleries, video, captions and credits — optimized for mobile traffic.

  • Search and archive

Fast search by year, author and topic; old material stays findable.

  • Advertising and analytics

Ad slots, sponsorship tags, statistics on reads and scroll depth.

04

What launching delivers

A finished publication lets the newsroom publish quickly and lets the site survive traffic spikes without falling over. We design such projects from the load and the editorial process, because that is exactly where solutions built “like a normal site” break.
